2010 State of the Neighborhood (SOTN) Saturday, September 11, 2010 on the parking lot of Raphael Health Center (34th and Central) Time TBA, SOTN will follow the Miracle on 34th Street Health Fair that takes place in the same location from 10am-2pm Back by popular demand: the Second Annual State of the Neighborhood celebration! Proven to be a fun and engaging event for all ages, the 2010 SOTN event will feature: FREE admission, food, stage performances (music, dance, story-telling, drumming, etc), exhibits, including a youth photography exhibit, Conversation Corners, Merchant's Village, multigenerational activities, and more! SOTN organizers are now looking for participants (stage performers and booth exhibitors) as well as volunteers to help at the event. Events in the Community Now Accepting Applications for the Mayor’s Youth Council July 26 thru July 30
The Office of Mayor Greg Ballard is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 Mayor’s Youth Council. The council consists of students across Marion County who serve as a voice for the Indianapolis Youth in City Government. Candidates must possess strong leadership skills, participate in school activities and be active in their community. Nominations must be made by candidates’ school principal, guidance counselor, school superintendent, teacher, faith leader or community leader in order to be considered for a position. The Mayor’s Youth Council is both a way to get involved and to give back to the community, allowing students to engage in a variety of community service projects and interact with local city leaders. Applications are due Friday, July 30. To nominate a youth for the Mayor’s Youth Council visit http://www.indy.gov/Mayor/MYC. FREE Lunches at Broadway Church July 26 thru July 31 at Broadway Church (29th & Broadway) Decatur Township Summer Lunch Program is offering lunch Monday-Friday from 11am-12:30pm! Children 18 yrs old and under can eat for free. Adults can eat for only $2.00. The lunch program runs from June 1-July 31. Note, Decatur is assisting in building economy in Mapleton-Fall Creek as three people fo our community have obtained employment through this initiative! Summer Supervised Playground and Lunch Program July 26 thru August 6, visit site for hours, at Al Polin Park (Talbott St & 29th St) Free lunch is being offered through IndyParks summer program. Easter Seals Project ACTION will host a two-week online discussion of paratransit services. Public transportation, aging services and disability services agencies are experiencing challenges due to economic conditions and service cuts. Participate to share your experiences, paratransit practices, challenges, and recommendations. For more information visit http://www.projectaction.easterseals.com/ INRC Training: How to Produce a Neighborhood History Tuesday, July 27 from 6-8:30pm at INRC (1802 N Illinois St) One of the recent trends in neighborhoods across Indianapolis is coming up with creative ways to research and tell about the unique history of their communities. This class will bring together neighbors that have produced histories, the Neighborhood Alliance Press whose mission is to help communities tell their stories, the IUPUI Digital Archives and the IUPUI Department of Anthropology that is using students to partner with neighborhoods to produce histories. Non-profit Tagline Project July 28 (Deadline) This organization produces the largest collection of nonprofit taglines ever assembled, and has research that shows most nonprofits either don’t have a tagline or have one that performs poorly. They are trying to solve this by highlighting the best examples among nonprofits and foundations via their annual awards program. Enter your tagline in their 2010 Awards Program by forwarding them. Each organization contributes to the GettingAttention.org tagline database and will receive a copy of their updated 2010 Nonprofit Tagline Report and full access to the online database. The report will help with the process of crafting effective taglines. For more information, visit their website. Fine Arts Program for Children at the Children’s Museum July 29 and August 5 Children ages 10 to 14 still have the chance to join a unique fine arts class at The Children’s Museum this summer. The Community Arts Program takes place the first Thursday from 4-6pm during Target Family Free Nights. During the classes, students will create arts projects that tie into the museum’s exhibits. Families can register in-person at the Concierge Desk or call the Call Center at 334-4000. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis until the class fills up. Based on the success of the program, this class could be offered year-round! Local Food Challenge Potluck Thursday, July 29 at 5:30pm at North United Methodist Church parking lot (38th and Meridian) The Indianapolis Food, Farm and Family Coalition is hosting a potluck In support of the 38th & Meridian Farmers’ Market. Admission is free, but bring a potluck dish to share made with locally grown/produced food. Be sure to bring along dining ware. Recipes will be posted on The Indianapolis Food Farm and Family Coalition’s blog. The Earth House Collective will pick one recipe from the Local Food Potluck to serve at the Earth House Café for the month of August. Please bring recipe card with your recipe to participate. Indy Peace Day Talent Show Tryouts Saturday, July 31 from 11am-2pm at Stetson Senior Apartments (703 E. 30th St.)
Come audition and use your talents to help unify the great City of Indianapolis with a message of compassion, community, and peace. Auditions will be held on July 24 and 31. Performances will be at the 2010 Indy Peace day, on September 11 at Riverside Park. If you or your group would like to perform, email your name, presentation title, age and genre of presentation to Pduckett2002@yahoo.com. All performances are volunteer. Summer BBQ and Pitch-In Saturday, July 31 from noon-3pm at 3346 N. Washington Blvd.
The Historic Meridian Park will hold a Summer BBQ and Pitch-In. The neighborhood association will provide hamburgers and hot dogs while residents are invited to bring their favorite dishes to the popular annual event. Back-up arrangements have been made to have the event at an alternate location if there is rain.
Ice-cream Social Saturday, July 31 at 2pm at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church (3421 N Park Ave)
Our Redeemer Lutheran Church is hosting an ice-cream social. The Good Vibrations team will entice your taste buds with an ice-ream and toppings bar, plus lemonade. Anyone interested in sharing their favorite homemade ice cream recipe is welcome to churn a batch at home and pack it for everyone to sample, just be sure to churn it at home! Corn hole toss, ladder ball and board games for some friendly competition indoors and outdoors will also be open for people! National Night Out Against Crime Tuesday, August 3 National Night Out is an annual nationwide event set to encourage residents to get out in the community, hold block parties and get to know their neighbors as a way to encourage crime prevention. This program has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable way to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in the fight for a safer community.
