2010 State of the Neighborhood (SOTN)

Saturday, September 11, 2010 on the parking lot of Raphael Health Center (34th and Central)

Time TBA, SOTN will follow the Miracle on 34th Street Health Fair that takes place in the same location from 10am-2pm

Back by popular demand: the Second Annual State of the Neighborhood celebration! Proven to be a fun and engaging event for all ages, the 2010 SOTN event will feature: FREE admission, food, stage performances (music, dance, story-telling, drumming, etc), exhibits, including a youth photography exhibit, Conversation Corners, Merchant's Village, multigenerational activities, and more!

  • SOTN organizers are now looking for participants (stage performers and booth exhibitors) as well as volunteers to help at the event. If you are interested in participating and/or volunteering, please contact Sarah at sarah_mncc@ymail.com.

Now Accepting Applications for the Mayor’s Youth Council

July 26 thru July 30 

The Office of Mayor Greg Ballard is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 Mayor’s Youth Council. The council consists of students across Marion County who serve as a voice for the Indianapolis Youth in City Government. Candidates must possess strong leadership skills, participate in school activities and be active in their community. Nominations must be made by candidates’ school principal, guidance counselor, school superintendent, teacher, faith leader or community leader in order to be considered for a position. The Mayor’s Youth Council is both a way to get involved and to give back to the community, allowing students to engage in a variety of community service projects and interact with local city leaders. FREE Lunches at Broadway Church

July 26 thru July 31 at Broadway Church (29th & Broadway)

Decatur Township Summer Lunch Program is offering lunch Monday-Friday from 11am-12:30pm! Children 18 yrs old and under can eat for free. Adults can eat for only $2.00. The lunch program runs from June 1-July 31. Note, Decatur is assisting in building economy in Mapleton-Fall Creek as three people fo our community have obtained employment through this initiative!

Online Paratransit Service Discussion

Tuesday, July 27 thru Friday, August 6 

Easter Seals Project ACTION will host a two-week online discussion of paratransit services. Public transportation, aging services and disability services agencies are experiencing challenges due to economic conditions and service cuts. Participate to share your experiences, paratransit practices, challenges, and recommendations.

INRC Training: How to Produce a Neighborhood History

Tuesday, July 27 from 6-8:30pm at INRC (1802 N Illinois St)

One of the recent trends in neighborhoods across Indianapolis is coming up with creative ways to research and tell about the unique history of their communities.  This class will bring together neighbors that have produced histories, the Neighborhood Alliance Press whose mission is to help communities tell their stories, the IUPUI Digital Archives and the IUPUI Department of Anthropology that is using students to partner with neighborhoods to produce histories.  Learn about these projects and how your community can begin this work. Non-profit Tagline Project

July 28 (Deadline)

This organization produces the largest collection of nonprofit taglines ever assembled, and has research that shows most nonprofits either don’t have a tagline or have one that performs poorly. They are trying to solve this by highlighting the best examples among nonprofits and foundations via their annual awards program. Enter your tagline in their 2010 Awards Program by forwarding them. Each organization contributes to the GettingAttention.org tagline database and will receive a copy of their updated 2010 Nonprofit Tagline Report and full access to the online database. The report will help with the process of crafting effective taglines. For more information, visit their website.

 

Fine Arts Program for Children at the Children’s Museum

July 29 and August 5

Children ages 10 to 14 still have the chance to join a unique fine arts class at The Children’s Museum this summer. The Community Arts Program takes place the first Thursday from 4-6pm during Target Family Free Nights. During the classes, students will create arts projects that tie into the museum’s exhibits. Families can register in-person at the Concierge Desk or call the Call Center at 334-4000. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis until the class fills up. Based on the success of the program, this class could be offered year-round!

 

Local Food Challenge Potluck

Thursday, July 29 at 5:30pm at North United Methodist Church parking lot (38th and Meridian)

The Indianapolis Food, Farm and Family Coalition is hosting a potluck In support of the 38th & Meridian Farmers’ Market. Admission is free, but bring a potluck dish to share made with locally grown/produced food. Be sure to bring along dining ware. Recipes will be posted on The Indianapolis Food Farm and Family Coalition’s blog.  The Earth House Collective will pick one recipe from the Local Food Potluck to serve at the Earth House Café for the month of August. Please bring recipe card with your recipe to participate.

 

Indy Peace Day Talent Show Tryouts

Saturday, July 31 from 11am-2pm at Stetson Senior Apartments (703 E. 30th St.) 

Come audition and use your talents to help unify the great City of Indianapolis with a message of compassion, community, and peace. Auditions will be held on July 24 and 31. Performances will be at the 2010 Indy Peace day, on September 11 at Riverside Park. If you or your group would like to perform, email your name, presentation title, age and genre of presentation to Pduckett2002@yahoo.com. All performances are volunteer.

 

Summer BBQ and Pitch-In

Saturday, July 31 from noon-3pm at 3346 N. Washington Blvd.  

The Historic Meridian Park will hold a Summer BBQ and Pitch-In. The neighborhood association will provide hamburgers and hot dogs while residents are invited to bring their favorite dishes to the popular annual event. Back-up arrangements have been made to have the event at an alternate location if there is rain.

 

Ice-cream Social

Saturday, July 31 at 2pm at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church (3421 N Park Ave) 

Our Redeemer Lutheran Church is hosting an ice-cream social. The Good Vibrations team will entice your taste buds with an ice-ream and toppings bar, plus lemonade. Anyone interested in sharing their favorite homemade ice cream recipe is welcome to churn a batch at home and pack it for everyone to sample, just be sure to churn it at home! Corn hole toss, ladder ball and board games for some friendly competition indoors and outdoors will also be open for people!

 

National Night Out Against Crime

Tuesday, August 3

National Night Out is an annual nationwide event set to encourage residents to get out in the community, hold block parties and get to know their neighbors as a way to encourage crime prevention. This program has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable way to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in the fight for a safer community. Check with your Crime Watch Officers for specific information about your district.   • Watson-McCord & Historic Meridan Park
    from 7pm-9pm, TAB Football Field (418 E 34th St) Watson McCord is hosting its annual National Night Out event, celebrating the 27th anniversary of the nationwide event.  Everyone is encouraged to attend. Connectivity between the NA’s and the CDC is vital to the success of a nationwide event such as this. Contact Nikki Moore at for more info.

    Children's Museum's Target Free Night to Feature Mayor Ballard and Mayor-Sponsored Charter Schools

    Thursday, August 5 at 5pm-5:30pm, Indianapolis Children's Museum

    Mayor Greg Ballard will address families at the Children's Museum's Target Free Night during a free back-to-school event. Mayor-sponsored charter schools and unique public schools offering education opportunities across the city will provide information and activities for children and families from 4-8pm. Museum admission is free during that time. The theme of the night will be "Back to School, Back to Fun," and will include free health and safety services for children.

     

    CICOA Farmers' Market $24 Vouchers Available for Eligible Seniors

    August 5

    A CICOA representative will be distributing vouchers at Farmers' Markets in Marion County to eligible seniors on July 21 and August 5 at the "Original Farmers' Market" (222 E. Market St.) from 9am-12pm, and on July 22 and August 5 at the "38th & Meridian Farmers' Market" (3808 N. Meridian) from 4pm-6:30pm.     KIB’s ReDome Art Contest

    Keep Indianapolis Beautiful asked schools, artists, neighborhoods and nonprofit organizations to re-use the former Hoosier Dome roof material in an effort to build community and display art around the city.     Indiana State Fair

    6th Annual Indy Kids Triathlon

    Saturday, August 7 at 9am, Sahm Park (6804 E 91st St)

    This is a kids-only event, combining swimming, biking and running and promoting fun, physical activity and self-confidence. Participants will receive a 2010 Indy Kids Triathlon T-shirt, commemorative medal and goodie bag. This event is not timed, so every kid is a winner! Bring: Swim clothes, swim cap, towel, bicycle, safety gear, helmet and shoes for running. Entry is $25 and distance is determined by age.     Oh! The Places You’ll Grow!

    Growing Places Indy is committed to cultivating the culture of food and urban agriculture. Because of this, they are hosting one more volunteer day workshop: “Harvesting and Ways to Preserve the Harvest.” All produce grown in the Slow Food Garden is sold to area restaurants throughout the summer season such as City Café, Goose the Market, R Bistro, Recess, Meridian, H20, Pizzology and Petite Chou/Napolese.     Front Porch Fridays

    Front Porch Fridays celebrates a time when people met on their neighbor's front porch to build relationships, exchange ideas and share resources.  We welcome all of you to bring your lawn chairs, stories and neighbors along to share in this collaborative event. This Spring and Summer, Front Porch Fridays take place on the 2nd Fridays of each month. The topic for our May discussion will include conversations about Public Allies, including who they are, what they do and how you can join them.  Current Allies will be present to discuss the program.  We encourage you to learn more about the program at www.publicallies.org.     Broadway UMC Garage Sale

    Saturday, August 14 

    The Broadway Finance Committee is having a Garage Sale. All proceeds will be used to supplement the church’s annual budget. A staging area has already been readied at the church where items can be collected and priced. Contact Cathy Pilarski if you have items to contribute, and schedule a drop off time for your donations. Items for sale need to be delivered to the church no later than Friday, August 6. The sale will be in conjunction with the Ivy Hills Annual Garage Sale event. Volunteers will be needed with trucks, vans and muscles to load items and take them to Mike Nix and Mark DeVore’s home on the afternoon and evening of Thursday, August 12.     Senior 1000 Forum Planning Meetings

    Seeking 1000 Seniors and concerned stakeholders to address ISSUES facing seniors at the Senior 1000 Forum Saturday, October 30, 2010 to be held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds from 9:00am-5:00pm. Mission and Expected Outcomes include:  Engage stakeholders to create and implement a Senior Citizens Forum that will address the Quality of Life Issues facing seniors in our communities such as crime, housing, health (physical & mental), community disconnect, and financial. Empower seniors to be well informed advocates for other seniors and themselves. Coordinate efforts and resources addressing seniors as it relates to the community. Utilize the talents, skills and knowledge of seniors in the neighborhoods that they live in and throughout the greater community via neighborhood organizations, schools, and other outlets.     Indianapolis Cultural Trail Brown Bag Meetings

    Slow Food Indy’s New England Lobster Bake

    Sunday, August 22 from 2:30pm-8pm, Apple Family Farm (3365 W State Road 234, McCordsville, IN)

    Funds from this event will be applied to the SFI Fund to help Kelly Funk and John Feree of Seldom Seen Farms, who are active SFI members and former Terre Madre delegates. Kelly Funk was struck by lightning while working on Seldom Seen Farms on July 9 and recovery will be long and expensive. There is virtually no limit to the number of participants, so make the trip to Apple Family Farm to show your support! Given fundraising goals, the cost is $75 per person. The menu includes lobster with drawn butter, Indiana corn on the cob, potatoes with fresh parsley, steamed mussels with white wine, butter and garlic, fresh coleslaw with mustard and celery seed and blueberry dessert, all prepared by Chef John Egerton and others.     8th Annual Feast of Lanterns

The Penrod Arts Fair

Saturday, September 11 from 9am-5pm on the Indianapolis Museum of Art's grounds (4000 Michigan Rd)

Come join the fun at this year’s 44th Annual Penrod Arts Festival! It is known as one of the largest single day art fairs in the United States, and this year’s fair promises to be one of the best! The Penrod Arts Fair will host a record 300+ artists on six stages and more than 50 arts-related non-profit organizations, with an extensive children’s area and lots of food and drinks.  Cost is $12 in advance and $17 Day of Show.
