Public Input Requested for Regional Mass Transit Various dates in February and March Indy Connect, Central Indiana’s Transportation Initiative, is seeking comment on a draft plan that draws on decades of public studies on transportation in Central Indiana, as well as the recommendations of the Central Indiana Transit Task Force, a private sector group that studied public transportation in the region. The plan includes various types of transportation, including major enhancements to the bus system, commuter rail running from downtown Indianapolis north to Fishers and south to Greenwood, in-street light rail along Washington Street in Indianapolis, major roadway expansions, and additional bike and pedestrian pathways. Indy Connect plans a series of town hall meetings for February and March, See meeting schedule and locations here. Public feedback and suggestions will be incorporated into a revised plan in late 2010 that will be presented to the public for further consideration. Learn about Invasive Plants and how to stop them with CWMA'sWednesday, March 3 at 2pm at Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds (2003 Pleasant St, Noblesville) An invasive plant is one that has the ability to thrive and spread outside its natural range. These plants do not have natural predators and as they thrive and spread they smother out and otherwise reduce the ability of our native plants to reproduce and grow. Organizations called Cooperative Weed Management Areas (CWMA) are being formed across the US to tackle the spread of invasive plants. The Hoosier Heartland RC&D is working to help organize a CWMA group that includes ten central Indiana counties. A meeting is scheduled March 3 is to inform local citizens about the invasive plant problem in our area and to explain the workings of a Cooperative Weed Management Area. Everyone is invited to attend. CWMA’s provide education about plant identification, damages and control methods. Many conduct workshops and field days to meet these objectives. Invasive plant control happens when local communities and landowners learn to identify the plants and how to control them. Over 50 plants in Indiana have been identified as being invasive or of special concern. Many are still available for sale at nurseries and garden centers. For more detailed information on invasive species identification and removal see the Midwest Invasive Plant Network at: www.mipn.org. For more information about the Hoosier Heartland RC&D contact them by phoning 317-290-3250, or visit their website at www.hhrcd.org Web Cast: Gardening on Brownfields Sites – Is it Safe? Local gardening and marketing initiatives and agricultural activities in urban areas are on the increase - especially recently, due to rising energy costs, demand for fresh, locally grown food, and society's interest in sustainable practices. Vacant and abandoned lots, i.e. brownfields may be "re-used" for gardening activities including food production, and many local farms are or will be located on land that may be impacted by previous use. In April 2009, Kansas State University (KSU) started to work with select community-based gardening/farming initiatives to evaluate uptake of heavy metals and other contaminants by food crops, and develop recommendations for seedbed preparation and corrective/protective actions to address contaminants. Please join the Brownfield Communities Network (BCN) and NALGEP on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 from 3:00-4:00 PM Eastern, for this FREE webinar. The webinar will discuss the challenges of converting brownfields to community gardens and provide guidance on how to address potential risks. To register, click here. FMI click here.
