Delaware Street Initiative
In 2000 MFCDC shaped a targeted comprehensive community development strategy called the Delaware Street Initiative (DSI). It was the corporation’s first large scale revitalization initiative focused on the 2800 and 2900 blocks of Delaware and Talbott Streets. The initiative was designed to combat the deterioration of housing and reduce criminal activity by building community, increasing homeownership, and improving neighborhood appearance. This was accomplished by purchasing and renovating existing homes, building new homes, and completing homeowner repairs. The new homes built in the DSI by Carley Custom builders were recognized in 2005 with a Silver Best in American Living Award (BALA) for excellence in energy efficient design.
In all, thirty-seven units were impacted and $3.19 million dollars were invested. The revitalization activities transferred abandoned and vacant properties into safe and affordable housing options for low- to moderate-income families. The number of owner-occupied homes and home values are on the increase. The area is now an inviting corridor in the Mapleton-Fall Creek neighborhood and is a shining example of how strategic development can transform a once underserved area into a community of choice.
